19.4.2a - Tier 1 Speech Support
Tier 1 speech support refers to universal, preventative strategies designed to promote strong communication skills for all students, regardless of ability. These supports are embedded into daily instruction and routines to build a foundation for language, articulation, listening, and social communication.
Tier 1 Speech Supports
HST Guidance
As a part of a Tier 1 Academic Support Plan, HSTs should guide parents in incorporating supports and strategies to develop speech and language skills when needed.
Examples of Tier 1 Speech Supports:
- Creating a language-rich environemnt
- Integrating language into all subjects
- Providing opportunities for oral language practice
- Promoting literacy through read alouds, storytelling and writing
- Providing specific instruction in new vocabulary concepts
- Providing specific instruction in grammar
- Encouraging opportunities for social communication
LC & Me Speech Classes
Weekly live, virtual classes geared toward providing the Learning Coach with immediate support through strategies and activities that foster speech and language development.
