A new bill will allow our TK English Learners to wait until they are in Kindergarten to take the Initial ELPAC. This is great news for our TK students! These little learners will have the gift of one year’s education before being required to take the Initial ELPAC. With this in mind, the South Schools would like to provide language support to these students as they work towards proficiency in English. It is our hope that by providing them with these resources, they will have the skills that they need to show proficiency on the Initial ELPAC before they begin Kindergarten.

  • What is a TK-TBD Student?
    • These are TK English Learner students who would have typically taken the Initial ELPAC upon enrolling in our school.
    • The state has recognized that these students are not old enough to have had enough exposure to English and schooling for the Initial ELPAC to be accurate
    • They have been given the gift of time!!!
    • They will take the Initial ELPAC prior to their Kindergarten year.
  • HST Responsibilities:
    • HST will be notified by the DSS that they have a TK-TBD student on their roster
    • They will follow THIS PROTOCOL as an initial assessment for the student’s English language proficiency. (It is a basic skills test, no reading/writing required.)
      • The outcome of this initial assessment is for information purposes only. It is meant to give you, the HST, information on how to best support the student throughout the school year. The student will be required to take the Initial ELPAC upon entering Kindergarten.
    • The Special Programs Coordinator will check in periodically with the HST to inquire about student progress
  • As as school, we are still required to provide additional English Language support for these students.
    • They will have to opportunity to receive a Lexia account
    • They will have the opportunity to receive a K- Speaking & Listening ELPAC Practice Workbook
      • Opportunity to practice the format of the ELPAC without the need for reading and writing
    • TK-TBD Students also have access to a variety of additional resources!
      • TK Subscription Boxes
      • Reading Eggs (OSP)
      • BrainPop ELL
